Inner Child Doll · a therapeutic art miniature
Calm in Your Palm
Did you know this little doll can gently heal what words can't reach?
You look at her, and something happens.
Your heart melts a little. A smile comes on its own. You want to keep looking, to notice every tiny detail. And then you want to hold her, to feel how small and real she is.
You might think: she's just adorable.
But that feeling isn't an accident. The moment you look at her, your brain and body quietly begin to change their state, from tension to calm, from worry to warmth.
Not a doll face. A child's real feeling.
Most dolls are made to be pretty. Mine are made to be felt.
Each face is sculpted by hand from clay and carries a real childhood moment: the tears before a cry, the pout after being told off, the "oops" after a broken vase, a laugh so big the eyes close, a cheeky tongue poking out.
You don't just see a doll. You recognise yourself as a child. I used to feel exactly like that. That recognition is where the healing begins.
A little helper when anxiety rises
When anxiety comes, with racing thoughts, a tight chest and a restless body, try something simple. Take her in your hand. Look at her face. Feel her tiny fingers, the soft fabric, the knitted hat.
Within a few moments, many people notice their breathing slow and their shoulders drop.
Here's why.
Did you know…
…her little face switches on the feel-good centre of your brain?
Big eyes, round cheeks, a small nose: scientists call this the baby schema. Brain scans show these features activate the brain's reward system. That's the warm melting feeling you get, and the natural urge to care.
Science: Glocker et al., 2009
…her emotion changes how you feel, whatever it is?
We automatically "catch" the feelings of the faces we look at. If she's calm and smiling, her calm passes to you: it's safe here. If she's sad or upset, tenderness switches on, and the wish to hold and comfort her.
Either way, your brain moves away from worry and towards warmth. And as you comfort her sadness, you learn to be gentler with your own.
Science: emotional contagion, Hatfield et al., 1994
…touch brings you back to the here and now?
Tiny fingers, little toes, the texture of knitted wool: when your fingertips explore these details, your attention moves out of anxious thoughts and into your body. Research shows gentle, soothing touch can lower the body's stress response.
Science: Dreisoerner et al., 2021
…your brain has a soothing system?
The brain has one system for threat and another for calm and care. Worry lives in the first. When you hold something small and tender, you invite the second to switch on.
Science: Paul Gilbert, Compassion-Focused Therapy
…you can be small and big at the same time?
When you hold her, you are both: the little one being held, and the grown-up doing the holding. I can be there for myself. Psychologists call objects like this transitional objects: they help us reach comfort that's hard to find on our own.
Science: D.W. Winnicott
…naming a feeling makes it lighter?
When we put a feeling into words, even whispered to a tiny figure in our hand, the brain's alarm centre calms down.
Science: affect labelling, Lieberman et al., 2007
Feelings that are hard to allow
You can choose the emotion your doll holds. Not only joy, but the feelings we often hide: sadness, anger, hurt, fear, cheekiness, the wish to be comforted.
When a feeling becomes something you can see and hold, it stops feeling "wrong". It becomes something you can accept, in her and in yourself.
The maker
Not just handmade. Heartmade.
My name is Svetlana. It comes from the Slavic word for light.
My hands are simply where my heart continues. Everything I make comes from there.
But I don't make these dolls alone. Each one is born between us, from your story, your memory, the feeling you long to meet. I listen first. Then her face slowly appears in the clay.
So she is mine, and not mine. She belongs to the one she was born for. That's why no two are the same, and why no one else could ever make her.
Something in me is always calling out, looking for the heart that will answer.
A gift like no other
I see you. And the child you once were. You matter to me.
She can be made from a childhood photo of your mum, grandmother, partner or best friend, or from a photo of their children or grandchildren. You choose the emotion.
No one has ever given a gift like this, and no one else ever will. Made from a photo, she becomes a family treasure, something to pass down.
For someone living with dementia
Dolls are used in dementia care to help ease anxiety and bring a sense of calm and connection. A doll made from an old family photo can also help bring back memories: faces, moments, love.
Imagine her in your hands
Imagine a tiny face looking back at you, a face that holds exactly the feeling you need to meet. Or imagine the moment someone you love opens a box and sees their own childhood smiling at them.
If something in you responded while reading this, a warm feeling, a memory, a face you'd love to hold, trust it. Maybe it's your heart answering. Write to me.
